Conference 2023 Schedule
Early bird tickets for the Beyond Suffrage conference will be available to purchase from July 2023. The conference will commence at 9am and will close at 6:30pm, during Trustees' Week.
The conference will be split into two separate streams, one for existing trustees who are currently looking to continue developing as trustees and a separate stream for prospective trustees who are actively looking to join a board. The conference will close with a networking session.
Our Beyond Suffrage Conference will be open to all women from minoritised ethnic communities currently serving on boards, or actively seeking board positions - with no age restriction. The full conference schedule is available below.

Welcome and keynote address

Introduction to trusteeship
9:45am-10:45am
As a trustee, having joined a board , you will be required to adhere to the requirements set out in charity law and the recommended practice set out by the Charity Commission. During this training session, prospective trustees will learn about what to expect as a trustee, including the duties and responsibilities that come with the role.
Applying for trustee roles
10:45am-11:45am
Finding positions on trustee boards can be very challenging, especially for younger prospective trustees and those from underrepresented communities. During this session, prospective trustees will learn about: how to apply for trustee positions; what information is required; where roles can be accessed; as well as, how to successfully get through the interview process.
Governance: Good practice on boards
9:45am-10:45am
In order for a charity board to be effective, it is important to ensure that good governance systems and practices are followed. During this session, trustees will learn about the fundamentals of good governance that will strengthen the board– including how the Charity Governance code may be applied.
What is on the horizon for charity trustees

The landscape in the charity sector is often changing, as a result of regulatory changes, environmental and social factors. During this session, trustees will learn about what regulatory changes are on the horizon for charities to consider.

Leadership and professional development

Young trustees are currently underrepresented on charity boards comprising less than 3% of all trustees serving on boards. During this panel session, prospective trustees will hear from a panel of young trustees, as they share their experiences of the highs and lows of applying and serving on a board.
Service user engagement
2:55pm-3:55pm
All trustees should have a sound understanding of charity finance. However, charity finance can pose as a challenge, especially for trustees with limited finance experience. During this in depth session, trustees will learn more about the fundamentals of good budgetary and management reporting systems, statutory reporting requirements and year end procedures.
Young trustees’ panel
12:15pm-1:05pm

During this panel session, prospective trustees will hear from a panel of young trustees, as they share their experiences of the highs and lows of applying and serving on a board.
Q&A applying for roles

During this 1 hour Q&A session, prospective trustees will have the opportunity to ask questions regarding trusteeship – including where and how to apply for roles. The Q&A session is specifically for prospective trustees looking to join a board.

Diversifying fundraising income

In the current economic climate, it is of paramount importance for charities to consider diversifying their funding sources. During this session, trustees will learn about the different methods of fundraising, where charities can apply for grants, and the essential information that trustees should know.
Women on boards: authentic leadership

Progress towards diversity on charity boards is being made – with high profile appointments of individuals from minoritised ethnic backgrounds being made. Attendees will hear from a panel of women who are currently serving as trustees, as they share their experiences of leading a charity, authenticity and navigating board dynamics.

Climate: How charities can become more sustainable

More organisations are considering sustainability, and how their day to day operations impact the climate. During this panel session, trustees will hear from panel of speakers serving on environmental charity boards, as they share insights on how charities can become more sustainable.
